Bedtime

Forty-one of Fremont County’s 4th, 5th, and 6th graders attended this year’s junior overnight held at the Ambassador Wellness and Activity Center in Nebraska City March 14-15.  The theme for this year’s camp was “Go Nocturnal with 4-H!”

As campers arrived at the Activity Center, they played mixer games to get to know other campers.  Then campers watched a presentation on nocturnal animals by a representative of the Henry Doorly Zoo while having their “fruit bat” snack. Next the four groups went to the Wellness Center for the Relay Races. The winning group got first pick as to which activity they wanted to do next. Their choices were swimming, gym time, track time, or “Find the Counselor”. Team number one won the relay challenge and chose to go swimming first. All other groups chose according to their ranking, and then we rotated stations into the late hours until it was time to get ready for bed. Campers then watched “Over the Hedge” and munched on popcorn till lights out.

Fremont County Extension personnel and County Council members worked together to bring this exciting opportunity to upper elementary students in Fremont County.  This gives them a chance to make friends with members of other clubs, as well as develop teamwork, communication, and other skills.

Extension staff coordinating this event was Tahrae Bonnes, Fremont County Youth Coordinator. Other adult leaders were Doug Doty, Fremont County Extension Education Director and Melvin Richardson, volunteer.  High school County Council members from Fremont County who assisted with the camp and served as counselors included Dominic Aistrope, Tanna Bonnes, Emily Aistrope, Kelsey Nenneman, Elizabeth Whitehead, Scott Johnson, Brian Nebel, Amber Lyda, Rebecca Jardon, Dani Fichter, Kara Cruickshank, Ristan Leiding, Tym Wood, Kayla Roberts, Chelsey Anderson, and Megan Lightfoot.
