“Youth Fitness Fun” is an new topic here and is being started by the Outdoor Family fitness work group started at the April 2011 Youth/Families In-service. Healthy Living is an Iowa and National Extension intitiative. We'll be sharing fun fitness activities for youth that may be used at day camps, summer camps, fun nights, club meetings and more to help get youth involved in physical fitness. We also want to hear how you have been successful in incorporating active, fitness fun in your 4-H work. What are your favorite activities? Let's do our part in helping get youth moving at all of our programs.

Here's a rainy or sunny day activity depending on whether you want to get wet or not.
UMBRELLA RELAY
What you need: Umbrellas
What you do:
Give each group an umbrella. Each person in line should open the umbrella and run to the other end and back, close the umbrella and give it to the next person.
This is a great source for FREE jumpropes for 4-H youth.
The Modern-Woodmen organization has several youth educational resources they provide to groups (including 4-H) on a variety of topics. They have Exercise & Nutrition information you can request - which includes FREE jumpropes for youth. Several counties have utilized this resource already and the jumpropes have been used for cloverkids programs, afterschool programs, at day camps, and in the schools through the FNP program.

The Clover Kids Webpage has great ideas. Go to http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/Clover/. Check out the Food and Nutrition/Healthy Living ideas under the Other Resources at the bottom of the page. Each of the newsletters also has active games to get kids moving.
