Can you all tell me how you handle your scrapie tags for your goats and sheeps at the county level? We require scrapie tags and up to this point, each member has been on their own to get their own tags. We have had a member tell us they have the breed of goat that has basically no ears. They called their vet to find out how to go about getting scrapie tags and how to mark the goat since they can't put on in the ear. The vet told them they couldn't help them and to call our office. I have already taken steps to help them, but I was wondering what you all have experienced or what your policies are.
Scrapie identification for goats can be through an ear tag or a tattoo. For the Lamancha breed of goats (ones with no ears), a tattoo of the scrapie number would be the thing to do.
Are most families on their own to get that scrapie tag number and to get their animal tatoo'd? I was a little floored the vet told them they were on their own, but I have a call in to another local vet to find out if they would be willing to help. The family doesn't feel comfortable tattoing the animal on their own.
