Tips for searching the ISU Extension Web Site:

You can perform three different types of searches on Extension's web site.

  1. The "All" search, which finds documents that contain all words entered in the search string.
  2. The "Any" search, which finds documents that contain any of the words entered in the search string.
  3. The "Boolean" search, which allows you to perform a powerful search using a combination of the other two methods.
    4. The "All" search is the most commonly used search type and is usually the easiest and best way to search for keywords, since only documents that contain all keywords will be found. For example, entering the seach string state fair will return all documents that contain both "state" and "fair".

    The "Any" search will find all documents that contain any of the entered keywords. For example, entering the search string state fair will return all documents that contain "state" and all documents that contain "fair".

    The "Boolean" search is useful if you need a more complex search. Using the words "and" and "or" as well as parentheses, it is possible to do a very intricate search. For example, searching for (state and fair) or (county and fair) will return documents that contain both "state" and "fair" as well as documents that contain both "county" and "fair". Searching for (state or county) and fair will return the same results. Searching for (state or county) and (fair or conference) will return documents about "state fair", "state conference", "county fair", and "county conference". As you can see, very complex searches are possible in this way.
