Seventeen young ladies gathered Saturday, October 6th to learn everything from how to make edible modeling dough to how to position a baby who has something caught in his throat at a basic babysitting class held at the Oelwein RAMS Center.

The 6 1/2 hour class cost participants $15 and was conducted by Fayette County Extension Youth Coordinator, Michele Kelly, with assistance from Oelwein Fire Captain, Mike Thoma. The girls came from Oelwein, Fairbank, Maynard, Manchester and Calmar.

Some of the girls, who ranged in age from 11 to 13, had some experience caring for young children, but they all wanted to gain more skills. Topics ranged from what information a sitter should always get from parents to the safest way to use the bathroom if the sitter is alone with a young child who is not asleep.  The girls also had an opportunity to make a healthy snack, a boo boo bunny and practice holding and diapering a life size baby doll, borrowed from West Central Consumer Science class.
