Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation and electronic filing for low- to moderate-income Iowans.

Certified community volunteers prepare taxes with computer software and help with special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.

2024 Extension Supported VITA Locations

VITA Intake Site - How it works: The taxpayer meets in-person with staff or volunteer who will verify your identification and help you to complete the intake form and order the tax documents. The tax forms and documents are scanned and uploaded to the organization providing volunteer tax preparers. Your tax return will be prepared within two weeks. The tax preparer will contact you if they have questions and when your tax return is complete and ready for review. You will come in person (or electronically) to sign the return. Once signed, the federal and state returns will be electronically filed for free.

IRS VITA tax sites are located throughout Iowa and partner with organizations including Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offices in some locations. Call the AARP volunteer tax preparers at 1-800-906-9887 to find a site near you.
