Extension to Families
Success Stories
Problem:
The Community Health Needs Assessment done by Franklin County Public Health, documented overweight as the number one problem in Franklin County. Survey results of 200 consumers and numerous focus groups agreed that this one health risk had ramifications which impact the overall health and well-being of the public at all ages, including the frequency of chronic disease. Overweight has been directly related to numerous life-threatening diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Response:
ISU Extension partnered with Franklin General Hospital, Franklin County Public Health and the Franklin Wellness Center to develop activities and programs on fitness and health for the Live Healthy Iowa program. In February, March and April participants could attend one hour programs on nutrition and exercise. The last month of LHI, 26 prizes were awarded to participants whose names were randomly drawn and one team prize was awarded. A Live Healthy Iowa grant allowed for prizes and program money to keep programs free.
Impact:
This year county participation was 20 teams with 126 participants. The Wellness Center ran a Biggest Loser program at the same time which encouraged participation in both programs. The four organizations involved were able to make a bigger impact in marketing and offering programs by pooling their expertise and resources. LHI was successful in networking the 3 organizations, and helped residents have a target time to work on fitness and health goals.
