My Healthy Plate

Problem:
Individuals who are overweight are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes. A county office requested a program related to preventing diabetes and healthy eating for those who are diagnosed as pre-diabetics.

Response:
My Healthy Plate was adapted from the Idaho Plate program to a 3 program series. The program presented the relationship of weight and type 2 diabetes and the risk factors of diabetes. A plate pattern for planning meals was introduced (and people were sent home with a weeks worth of divided plates). Participants learned to read food labels and to fit combination dishes to the healthy plate pattern. Each program also contained information on being physically active (aerobic activity, flexibility activities and Strength training activities). Participants received pedometers and stretch bands.

Impact:
17 participants began the series (some couples attended). Evaluation data was received from 11 participants. On a 3 point scale:
8 participants scored information about diabetes and weight a 3 (top end of the scale) and 3 participants scored information a 2.
9 participants scored information about the effects of diabetes a 3, and 2 participants scored information a 2.
10 participants scored information on how to use the "Healthy Plate" method of planning meals a 3, and
1 participant scored information a 2.
9 participants scored the tools and information on physical activity a 3, and
2 participants scored tools and information a 2.

Comments included:
This program was excellent in understanding weight, diabetes and what should be on a healthy plate, and understanding food labels better.
I have started using a scale every day as I prepare our meals.
Thank you for this very educational program.
Excellent handouts and supplies - Good Job!
