Success Stories
Problem:
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in Iowa. A heart-healthy lifestyle will reduce the risk of heart disease. Many are not aware or don’t understand the diet and exercise changes they can make that will reduce their risk of heart disease.
Response:
“Habits for Healthy Hearts” is a program from Iowa State University Extension that makes it easier to develop the good habits that will lead to a healthier heart. The program was co-sponsored by ISU Extension and Iowa Central Community College in six 90 minute sessions held in Fort Dodge. Sessions were offered at 3:00 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. for 6 Mondays in January and February with 16 total participants. There was a $65 fee for individuals and $90 fee for couples. Each session included tasting heart-healthy recipes, hands-on activities, a power point presentation, discussions and learning new ways to be more physically active. Participants received a calendar with recipes and physical activity tips, a placemat with serving size recommendations, pedometer, exercise stretch band, grocery shopping tear pad and various handouts.
Impact:
Participants learned about making healthy food choices, how to decrease fat, sodium and sugar in their diet, how to include physical activity as part of their daily routine, guidelines for shopping at the grocery store, and making smart choices when dining out. In an 8 week follow-up evaluation that 11 participants returned, all 11 indicated that they have taken action to modify at least one of their personal risk factors for heart disease, all but two are eating 3-5 servings of vegetables and 4-5 servings of fruit each day, all but two are eating whole grains each day, and all but one is making low fat and low sodium choices. Everyone is working on habits to make more healthful choices when eating out and modifying recipes to be more healthy. Various comments from participants included: We are trying unusual fruits and vegetables more often. I learned a lot and review the handouts regularly. I would recommend this class to everyone. It has given me the motivation to keep making changes. The community college wants to co-sponsor this program again in the fall and I look forward to providing it.
