Iowa State University Extension

ServSafe class with 100% pass rate

Problem:
Food Safety is a concern for everyone. ISU Extension offers ServSafe certification to a wide range of Food Service professionals to assure the public that food is safe. Food reaches the public through a variety of venues.

Response:
ISU Extension offers food safety training with the ServSafe certification to all food services. In rural areas finding a program may be difficult for some food service managers. By offering this course in a variety of locations throughout the year, more mangers and employees can take the class. By more people achieving certification, the food reaching the public should be safer to consume. A class was held in Lucas county in May, this included one school food service, two hospital food service, two restaurant food service managers, and one grocery store vendor.

Impact:
1.Participants in the Lucas county class all expressed knowledge gained and the appreciation of having the class offered "close to home"

2. 100% of the participants passed the national ServSafe exam.

3. Follow up from this class has not been completed yet.

4. There are positive economic and social consequences with increased certified food service managers and assurances that food safety standards are met.
