Mind Body Skills Groups for Flood Recovery

Problem:
Flood recovery from the Flood of 2008 continues for individuals, families, businesses and organizations in the Linn County area. Relocation, rebuilding, buyouts, and tax abatements are daily news items for people living in this area. Many families, businesses and organizations are still in temporary locations. Individual’s stress levels rise with natural disaster, financial concerns and other life events. Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, attempted suicide, chronic illness, relationship difficulties and other stress related symptoms are reportedly rising according to local mental health professionals.

Response:
The Linn County Mind Body Medicine Coalition comprised of 9 agencies is addressing these issues by facilitating Mind Body Skills groups for those affected by the Flood of 2008. The Rockwell Collins Foundation awarded grant funding to train and supervise 10 professionals to conduct groups for flood affected people. Iowa State University Extension Family Life Specialist, Kristi Cooper conducted Mind Body Skills groups for staff of the Cedar Rapids Public Library (8 weeks, July – September 2009), Linn County Extension (8 weeks January – February 2009) and members of the Project Recovery Support group (5 weeks, June – July 2009). Each group attended a series of 1-2 hour weekly educational sessions practicing tested techniques for reducing stress and its impact on mental and physical health including breathing, meditation, imagery, movement, autogenics, biofeedback, and more.

Impact:
Of the three groups facilitated by Cooper, 100% of the 20 people attending were directly affected by the flooding with the loss of home or business or indirectly by helping friends, relatives or organizations in the recovery process. Of those surveyed, 60% reported moderate or severe symptoms of anxiety or depression at the beginning of the group. All participants reported an increase in knowledge about personal symptoms of stress and increased use of mind body skills to reduce stress. Although most of the participants had not yet returned to their homes or permanent business locations, they reported an increase in “hope for the future”. One 75 year old woman stated after a yoga experience “This class helps me learn to breathe right and I feel lighter, free-er.” A man whose spouse died when medical care was interrupted said, “This helps me find a quiet place within myself.” A mother said “I feel calmer and more open.” Another said, “This helps me focus on what I need to do.” A displaced employee said they felt “more relaxed and less muscle tension.” A professional whose workplace had been relocated several times admitted “I am ready to do some self care.” 100% of participants indicated they would recommend the class to others.
