Strengthening Skills in Family Development and Parenting Education

Problem:
Professionals who work with families and parents need to understand and practice core competencies to better serve their clientele and to maintain their positions. The Partnering with Parents (PWP) training has been available to those who teach parenting education to small groups or one-on-one. The Family Development Certification Training (FDCT) has been available to those who work with families in small group or one-on-one through home visitation. Many individuals and agencies would benefit from having the broader knowledge base of both programs, so a combined certificate program, Strengthening Skills in Family Development and Parenting Education, was offered.

Response:
ISUE staff cooperated to offer (PWP) and (FDCT) as a joint program called Strengthening Skills in Family Development and Parenting Education. A series was offered in Ft. Dodge February-May 2009.

Impact
Seventeen learners attended the training. Sixteen learners received at least one certificate at the end of the training period: 7 in both PWP and FDCT, 3 in PWP, and 6 in FDCT. Overall response to the combined training was positive, with participants reporting increased understanding of the strengths-based approach, cultural diversity, difference in parenting styles, challenges facing families, and evaluation. They also reported increased skill in using various techniques to work with group and individuals.
