Extension to Families
Success Stories
Problem:
Individuals may make quick decisions without fully thinking through the consequences for their choices. Lack of knowledge or experience in using different methods of critical thinking allows individuals to continue to make decisions that may not be best for them. At-risk families involved with the Healthy Families Program with the Siouxland District Health Program and program staff identified a need related to decision making skills.
Response:
The ISU Extension Field Specialist met on a weekly basis for four weeks with eight participants. The course consisted of educational material and class exercises from the Workplace Essentials curriculum, which focuses on the soft skills people need to be successful in the workplace. The class learned characteristics of an informed thinker. They also discussed various problem solving skills and applied them in class using a participant problem as a sample to problem solve. Hands-on activities were offered on each skill in order to allow everyone to practice the skill to determine which best met their thinking style. Participants were also able to look at their time management skills as well as understanding the importance of having a plan B or a plan C to allow them to be adaptable to their situation. Participants felt comfortable discussing the challenges they face and were very supportive of one another in working to solve a particular problem. The group was able to apply the skills to challenges participants face at home as well as in the workplace.
Impact:
One participant in the series stated an intent to change by using the POCS (problem, option, consequence, solution) problem solving method more , while another will use brainstorming to solve her problems. Four participants indicated an intent to prioritize and implement time management skills. All participants reported the information presented and skills taught will be beneficial to them in their personal and work lives. Participants were able to identify skills learned to problem solve. One month later, a participant reported she had utilized the time management skills to complete the task of organizing her records at home, having unsuccessfully attempted to complete this task for several months prior to the workshop.
