Physical Activity and a Healthy Life Style

Problem:
Many Americans do not get enough exercise. Physical exercise is part of the healthy life style promoted in MyPyramid. We know that exercise:
1. Reduces risk of heart disease, high blood pressure & diabetes
2. Helps maintain a healthy weight
3. Keeps bones strong
4. Increases energy
5. Improves sleep & mood

Response:
Healthy activity can stimulate the mind and effect emotions. Exercise can no longer be an isolated event. Therefore, we are incorporating exercise, movement, and physical activity into a broad array of programs. All the EFNEP lessons have an exercise component now.

Staff at Heart of Iowa (a group site) have noticed the difference in attitude of the participants after they have been in our class and have done some physical activity. We have a stretching component in each EFNEP youth lesson. Teachers are amazed how easy it is to get the kids to stretch. The teachers seem more likely to include a physical component in some of their lessons, when they see how the kids respond.

In programs that don’t have a physical activity component, we have added some physical activity during the program. For example, in programs like Eat to Compete (for coaches) we incorporated stretching activities. In local programs like ServSafe, we also build in stretching activities. This summer, we have used the resource used last fall in ISUE specialist training Yoga Pretzels with our youth program. Any visiting parent also got active when the youth did. Upcoming programs like Body and Soul, Healthy Habits for a Healthy Heart, Eating Well Moving More all stress the importance of exercise. The importance of exercise has been included in newsletters, news articles and media.

Impact:
Stressing physical activity in the EFNEP program has increased the participants’ physical activity by 46.6%. EFNEP/FNP youth are more attentive to the nutrition lesson after they have stretched and participated in a physical exercise activity. Adults attending extension programs often continue to stretch or move after our planned physical exercise. These activities are especially important as the major flood event in the area has raised the stress level for everyone; even those not directly affected have suffered the loss of places they went their whole lives. Exercise not only improves general health, but reduces stress as we continue to deal with on-going problems and rebuild a healthier community.
