Problem:
The need for free tax preparation and E-filing was identified during Study Circle activities of the Horizons Program. Low income wage earners and senior citizens on limited incomes were being charged a minimum of $75 to prepare a 1040 and/or $35 per form for the Stimulus Payment.

Response:
Five volunteers were identified, trained and tested to man the newly created Waukon VITA site. Grant dollars were requested to buy a computer, printer, supplies and pay the mileage of those attending the training. Allamakee County Extension provided a room, desk and staff to take appointments and answer questions. The site was open Mondays, 9 AM - 4:30 PM, March through April 14th.

Impact:
"My name is Colleen Tierney and I would like to say how pleased and grateful I am to the Allamakee County Extension Office for providing Free Tax Preparation Assistance and E-filing. Last year, I paid $210 to have my taxes prepared and filed. I am a single mother and receive no assistance so this service was greatly appreciated. This allowed me to keep a few extra dollars in my pocket to use on my child." 

"A big thank-you is in order for the free preparation of my income tax return. I paid $119 last years for this service. I do not feel I got any better or more gracious service last year compared to this year. As a retired citizen, any way I can save money brings a smile to my face. I will be telling my family and friends about this great service! Sincerely Yours, A Very Happy Citizen, Shelby J. Mundt."

The Waukon VITA site provided electronic filing for 25 local residents, recovering $7,076 in Earned Income Credit, $18,100 in Federal Refunds, and $2,490 in State Refunds. With an average preparation fee of $100, the VITA site saved Waukon residents approximately $2,500. Forty-seven senior citizens sought help filing the 1040A required to be eligible for the Stimulus Payment. At $35 for filing, the VITA site saved Waukon residents $1,645.
