Strengthening Skills in Parenting Education and Family Development

Problem:
Professionals who work with families and parents are in need of certificated training to better serve their clientele and to maintain their positions. The Partnering with Parents (PWP) training has been available to those who teach parenting education to small groups or one-on-one. The Family Development Certification Training (FDCT) has been available to those who work with families in small group or one-on-one. Many individuals and agencies would benefit from having the broader knowledge base of both programs. Those who have taken both certification programs find that there is overlap and repetition of some content and therefore, wasted time, effort, and money.

Response:
ISUE staff cooperated to offer (PWP) and (FDCT) as a joint program. The curriculum was reviewed and revised to emphasis critical components and eliminate duplication, agendas and teaching materials were written, and a pilot series was offered in Marshalltown from February-May 2008.

Impact
Initially, 39 learners attended the training. A total of 33 received 1 or more certifications: 24 in both PWP and FDCT, 2 in PWP, and 7 in FDCT. Overall response to the combined training was positive, with participants reporting increased understanding of the strengths-based approach, cultural diversity, difference in parenting styles, challenges facing families, and evaluation. They also reported increased skill in using various techniques to work with group and individuals.
