Extension to Families
Success Stories
Problem:
Women in transitional housing programs are economically vulnerable, struggling with many issues, and in need of basic needs. Social service support and programs assist families until they are able to be self-sufficient. Classes provide guidance and education to help the women stabilize their lives. The directors of two transitional housing programs were searching for financial education classes and welcomed ISU Extension's willingness to meet this need.
Response:
Iowa State University Extension is providing financial educational classes for participants in transitional housing programs in two urban cities. Partners include U.S. Bank in Cedar Rapids and the DollarWise Partnership in the Quad Cities. Eight classes have been held and additional classes are scheduled. Classes have included information on developing a spending plan, managing financial accounts, and credit reports.
Impact:
A total of 18 women have participated in the various classes. Participants must attend classes regularly to participate in the housing programs. At least one assistance program (Food assistance, FIP/TANF, Child Nutrition, etc.) is used by 83% of the participants. As a result of participating in the financial classes, 94% of the women indicated they planned to make positive changes in managing their money. Actions planned include:
