Extension to Families
Success Stories
Problem:
Access to fresh fruits and vegetables can be limited in rural areas. The cost of fresh produce may be prohibitative for some households. The "Lyon County Fights Hunger" campaign is designed to help people learn about making healthy food choices, as well as to have access to food.
Response:
Lyon county is home to one of the Iowa State University Demonstration Gardens . Each year, we have produce to share from the garden. This year, plans were made to harvest and distribute to households in need (such as elderly, low resource), as well as to family day care providers - to help young children learn about fresh produce for snacks and meals. A children's garden was planted at the Demonstration Garden for a second year. A third phase of the program is underway. During the months of October and November, 4-H clubs are donating nonperishable food items to the county food pantry.
Impact:
From the ISU Demonstration Garden : Approximately 30 pounds of beets, 20 pounds of cabbage, and at least 50 pounds of tomatoes were harvested and distributed from the ISU Demonstration Garden . Approximately 6.5 volunteer hours were put into harvesting and delivering. (Of course, additional volunteer hours were spent tending the garden over the growing period.) Older residents who received fresh produce commented:
The children at a family daycare site enjoyed exploring and tasting several varieties of tomatoes - an opportunity they would not have otherwise had. One child requested - "bring more 'pink ladies' the next time." (The variety is actually "summerpink.")
The Children's Garden: Twenty children from an after school program learned about gardening, and assisted with planting a "pizza garden."
Food drive: A "food pantry wish list" was printed in the 4-H newsletter - providing suggestions for foods from each food group. A donation goal of one food item per 4-H member was set. To date, we are well on our way to meeting and passing that goal.
