Extension to Families
Success Stories
Problem:
Families living in poverty face many issues and seek help from local service agencies. Often the service providers lack the understanding of the issues facing the poor.
Response:
To help organizations strengthen their capacity to work with low income families, Iowa State University Extension was asked to conduct a Poverty Simulation in Clinton County . The simulation provided an opportunity for participants to “walk a mile in the shoes” of someone living in poverty. By assuming the role of a family in poverty, participants experienced what it might be like to be a typical low income family living trying to make ends meet from week to week. A discussion about food insecurity issues in the community followed the simulation.
Impact:
The simulation was attended by 48 participants and 13 volunteer staffers. Participants completed pre and post evaluations. Results are below.
