Healthy Habits for the Heart

Problem:
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for African American women and men. Heart health education is crucial in helping this population to under risk and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Response:
The Nutrition and Health Specialist presented workshops at several African American churches during February, which is American Heart Month. The information was adapted from information from the American Heart Association.

Impact:
Participants completed end of meeting surveys and indicated that they would do the following:

  • Drink less pop.
  • Drink juice that has 100% on the label.
  • Stop using so much salt on my food.
  • Read labels and watch for sodium intake.
  • I am going to implement the recommended serving size daily for fruits and vegetables.
  • I am going to start cooking my meals healthier and stay away from grease.
