Extension to Families
Success Stories
Problem:
Research indicates that family meals provide numerous health benefits for children. In addition, a 2006 survey conducted by the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University showed that children who ate dinner with their families five or more times a week did better in school. However, finding the time for family meals is a challenge for most.
Response:
Staff from the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) partnered with Friendly House, a local community agency in Davenport, to provide a series of five family nights. The purpose of the series was to promote family interaction through mealtime. Menus were developed using recipes from the EFNEP curriculum. The participants prepared and ate dinner together. Interactive games were provided to engage families in physical activity. Seven families (17 individuals) participated. In addition, EFNEP staff presented information about nutrition and food safety. As an enhancement, each familiy received the food ingredients to encourage duplicating the recipes at home.
Impact:
The following are results from a survey conducted after the program:
1. I learned something new that will strengthen my family. YES 17 NO 0
2. We spent time together that we would normally not spend together. YES 14 NO 3
3. We participated in activities that we normally do not. YES 14 NO 3
4. We communicated more than we typically do. YES 14 NO 3
5. Our family relationship has improved. YES 16 NO 1
Some Comments:
I had a fun time the past five weeks.
Everybody worked together and it was fun.
It was a very good experience. In the future, I would hope we can attend another class like this one.
This was a splendid idea.
My family looked forward to next week, every week. I am sorry that it has come to an end so quickly.
It was very fun and I got to hangout and communicate more with my family. Thank you so much.
This was very fun. I enjoyed this time with my girls ... we do not spend together.
