Spending Leaks for Gamblers

Problem:
Gambling has effected all our communities and has caused special problems with credit card debt. Often time's debt is barrowed from friends, family and in other unconventional ways- such as cash advances. Dealing with money is like putting drugs in an addict's hands. Learning to deal with debt has to be dealt with in different ways for gamblers verses other people's debts due to this addiction.

Response:
The Family Resource Management Field Specialist conducted 3 sessions Northwest Iowa Drug Treatment Unit with gamblers. NWIADTU gambling prevention counselor and gambling prevention specialist helped facilitate these meetings. The 2.5 hour program was targeted to how to look at gambling debt through Power Payments, look at spending leaks, interest, and wants verses needs. Cooperation with significant others in handling the income and expenses and how to set up debt repayment was discussed It was recommended to have one on one consultation. Special training for the family resource management field specialist on gambling additions has occurred throughout this year

Impact:
Some comments from participants were, "This has been very helpful. Great resources, thanks for your help." All of the participants will address their finances. All but one individual has a partner or significant other who has taken over their finances.
