Farm Safety
in Page County
Need for
Program:
Mrs. Marie Miller donated $500 to Iowa State University Extension in
Page County in memory of her son, Marlin. She wanted the money to be
spent on a farm safety program in the South Page School district. Mrs.
Miller explained that Marlin had been concerned about the well-being
of youth.
Response:
I met with the superintendent and principal, built the partnership,
planned the day, and lined up speakers. The five stations were Hazards
on the Farm, Grain Bin Safety, Tractor and Auger Safety, Power Takeoff
Safety, and Farm Animal Safety.
Impact:
All kindergartners through eighth graders rotated through the stations.
Dennis Schmitz, a farmer from Ravenwood, Missouri, explained how a power
takeoff had grabbed his clothes, broke his bones, and landed him in
the hospital. He had graphic photos of his injuries and torn clothes
to make his point. Schmitz made a big impression on the students. In
fact, high school boys asked if they could listen to him. I received
many positive comments from the administration, teachers, and students.
