Rosenboom’s
Success Story
Situation:
Quality childcare continues to be a major program effort in Iowa. With
the help of data collected through a variety of research projects, Extension
has been able to advance to the next stage of working with child care
providers in the state to make necessary steps of improving the quality
of child care throughout the state...
Action:
ISU Extension Family Life field specialist, training in the Family Daycare
Environmental Rating Scale (FDCRS), contracted with Child Care Resource
and Referral to conduct a six hour provider training on the FDCRS as
a component of their Parent/ Infant Toddler Care program.
As a result of this training, child care providers learn how to evaluation
their own program and develop a self-improvement plan.
Impact:
A three month follow-up evaluation of the family day care providers
attending this training this past winter showed the following improvements
had been made.
Total of 48 families
served
Total of
73 children in daycare
Since attending
the FDCRS Training series:
4 completed a self
assessment using the FDCRS book and score sheet
1 completed an Action
Plan based on my self-assessment
6 made changes/improvements
in their childcare program
Changes made in
their program since completing the FDCRS Training:
-
Put up more
labels- mirrors- working on a fence-put up a welcome board–added
shelf in the shed-put a stove in the basement and making sure that
each child is getting everything I can give them
-
Now have a
fence fund in place-kids are brushing their teeth 1-2 times a day-no
more cups and bottles in bed
-
Hand washing
even the younger children after diapering and toileting- make mare
materials available-need to purchase some kind of storage unit to
place things in I’ve been looking but can’t find what
I want-Also I have polices on a sheet of paper but would like to get
it into a parent handbook------.
-
Labels on totes
containing children’s toys and received musical instruments,
cd’s from a grant
-
Rotate art
work display on a monthly basis-rotate toys in and out of the play
centers, having more variety-make the most available floor space for
children to play
-
Have a dry-erase
board on my counter and show activities /meals for each day and also
coming activities-make sure coloring papers and crayons makers all
easily accessible to the children
