Problem:
Hispanic people often have problems writing a check and using credit cards
appropriately. They may find they are short of money, and are working
many hours outside of the home with no time left to organize papers or
bills. In addition, they may struggle with obesity as a consequence of
fast food and lack of proper nutrition.
Response:
Iowa State University Extension in Woodbury County offered a program in
Spanish called Living Smart. It was a 2- hour program for 4 weeks; families
learned how to write a check, the importance of talking about finances
in families, setting a financial goal, and making a debt payment plan.
Families practiced tracking their money with an income worksheet and a
spending worksheet. Families learned about credit cards and how to decide
which creditors to pay first. One class was on nutrition and focused on
food for children, how to have a balance diet with healthy foods and exercise.
Five families participated in this program.
Impact:
All of the families
where surprised by how much they spend on coffee, drinks, cookies and
high interest rates on credit cards. They made the decision to reduce
spending on things they wanted but don’t need. They realized that
it is important to start cutting debt and communicating as a family about
money issues.
