Child Care
Provider License
Problem:
Hispanic Families are looking for high-quality child care,
where providers know their culture and can communicate in their language.
However it is difficult for Child Care Providers whose first, or only,
language is Spanish to become registered.
Response:
ISUE, Woodbury County, in partnership with New Iowan Center
and Regional Child Care Resource and Referral decided to offer ChildNet
in Spanish to give these providers opportunity to take training to become
Registered Child Development Home Providers. There were 10 participants
facing different problems--English language, lack of ideas about how
to improve their business, and inadequate knowledge about ages and stages
of children.
Impact:
They came to all the classes and received a certificate in
each class. One of them obtained her license, one renewed her license.
The others are still working to complete the next steps--CPR, First
Aid, Mandatory Child Abuse Training. All of them now are more professional,
have emergency phone numbers posted, maintain information about children,
practice hand washing all the time, are aware of the individual differences
of each child.
Testimonial Statement from a Participant:
“My friends said why you are going to the school, you are not
going to learn, you better stay at home--but now I know that I can learn
something and I will.”
