Sharing Information: Keeping High School Educators Informed
Problem:
High school educators teach a broad selection of topics in their classrooms. There is very little time in their work schedule to investigate and learn about changes in family economics and new teaching resources.
Response:
While visiting schools to determine their use of the High School Financial Planning Program, an updated list of email addresses for educators in the Math, Economics, Business, and Family and Consumer Science classrooms was complied and an electronic newsletter is sent twice a year at the beginning of each semester to provide updated facts and resources for classroom use. Guidance Counselors and Alternative School educators also receive the newsletter.
Impact:
One hundred and fourteen individuals receive updated information to supplement textbook information that has become outdated, learn about new teaching resources, and receive registration information for staff development opportunities. Requests for copies of the High School Financial Planning Program workbooks have been sustained. Educators who previously duplicated and shared information from personal visits shared email addresses of colleagues. Educators from other school districts not served in the area have emailed and asked to be added to the mailing list. Three education programs dealing with credit and financial planning were presented to 78 students in three school districts. Each news piece results in an affirmation of the value of the information, as in the following message from a Family and Consumer Science Educator: “Thank you for your updates and finding new things for us to use…..that was our topic today and I have copied the information to use tomorrow. Greatly appreciated!"
