Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Problem:
Informal caregiver and family caregiver are terms that refer to unpaid individuals such as family members, friends and neighbors who provide care. We’re a nation of caregivers: an estimated 44.4 million Americans ages 18 and older provide some type of unpaid care to another adult. Iowa ranks 4th in the nation in adults 65+, 2nd in the nation in adults 75+, and 1st in adults 85+. In Cerro Gordo County, according to the 2000 census, 1 out of every 4 adults is 55 and older.

Our society is a better place because of caregivers. The value of family caregiving to society is estimated at $257 billion annually. This dollar amount doesn’t take into account the physical and emotional toll that being a caregiver takes. Caring for an older family member is stressful and takes an enormous physical, emotional and financial toll on caregivers.

Response:
During 2003-4, Iowa State University Extension sponsored Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC) class leader training for ISU extension educators and community partners. 13 teams were trained and certified – Frances Hoffman, Director of Hospice of North Iowa, and Janet Brown, Family Life Field Specialist, were from Mason City. The Robert Wood Foundation provided funds to train an additional 2 people (Ann MacGregor and Carol Peterson) in the North Iowa area.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers consists of six 2 ½ hour class sessions held once a week. Two certified class leaders conduct each session using a curriculum originally developed in Oregon and sponsored by Mather LifeWays of Chicago. Each class incorporates several tools to build confidence and enhance communication skills. However, while the classes have an educational focus, participants give and receive much needed support through the sharing that occurs.

Impact:
Three sessions of PTC have been completed with 20 participants. Six participants cared for a spouse in a care facility. One participant cared for a sibling in the home. 12 participants cared for a spouse in their home. One participant led a support group. Participants are charged $30 for the series which includes the Caregiving Helpbook. The First Lutheran Church of Northwood and Good Samaritan Home of Forest City graciously provided space and snacks for two of the programs.

100% of the participants felt they were more confident in their caregiving skills, such as using positive communication techniques, using weekly action plans for self-care and linking with community resources. Making action plans, finding out they are not the only ones going through this, learning about stress and how to manage it, and the sharing of ideas with others were all listed as “what they liked best.” 100% said they would recommend the course to others. Many want their groups to continue meeting and stay in touch.
