Eat to Compete

Problem:
In spring of 2005 the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High Athletic Union partnered with Iowa State Univeristy Extension to develop sports nutrition resources specifically for junior high and senior high athletes. Based on input from over 1,000 coaches the following areas were identified as needs – fluids, dietary supplements and the training diet. Appropriate methods for delivery of the information were identified as videos/DVDs, presentations, and activities to reinforce the information presented. The major responsibility for delivery of the “Eat to Compete” program information is via Iowa State University Extension.

Response:
Working with the school nurses in the Davis County School system the Nutrition and Health Specialist organized an “Eat to Compete” program for students in grade 6 – 11 and their parents and coaches. The format of the program included a 5:30 to 6:30 evening meal that was representative of a balanced training meal followed by a presentation from 6:30 to 7:30 on training diets. The program was presented by the State Nutrition and Health Specialist. Community partners became involved in the “outreach effort” and sponsored the evening meal making it available at no cost to those attending the meeting. Community sponsors included: Davis County Extension, Davis County Cattlemen, Mutchler Community Recreation Center, Community 1st Bank, Davis County Savings, Bank of the West, Community 1st Credit Union, Farm Bureau, Davis County Hospital, Keith’s Foods, Frito Lay and Davis County Schools. The local newspaper provided media coverage as did the area TV station.

Impact:
103 individuals attended the program. Evaluations completed by participants at the end of the presentation revealed that 95 – 100% off the individuals felt the information had been effectively communicated and reinforced through activities. 74-93% of the respondents were able to correctly identify the concepts and knowledge shared in the program.
