| Goals
set by participants in the year 3 trip
My goal is to examine youth/family activities that will introduce extension programs to Hispanic families. This would include how to market youth programs to this audience. Currently there are summer camps through the basic grant that is happening in the northern Louisa County area. The schools are 68% Hispanic. This provides a tremendous opportunity to build on the existing summer camps. Enlarging an existing Hispanic 4-H club by adding 2-3 more members in the next year is another option. Goal of improving cultural awareness and understanding cultural differences by 4-H youth, leaders, Extension Councils and 4-H families.
The second focus of my goal would be to provide leader training in Louisa County to provide insight for 4-H leaders, Extension Council and youth to the cultural Heritage of people living in their community. This would strengthen and possibly motivate non Hispanics to include persons different than themselves in club activities. Understanding cultural backgrounds and benefit both cultures to grow and share among themselves. A cultural Diversity or Heritage display will be a part of one of the Area Extension Council meetings in the 2005 or 2006 year.
Within the next year Extension Council presentations will be planned in both in both Des Moines and Louisa County . Cultural awareness will also be a part of the 4-H leader training in both counties. (G Kerns)
I am going to be working with Beth Fleming, Jeff Macomber and Rosa Morales de Gonzalez to try to find funding to continue the CYFAR work in Perry. In addition, I want to work with Rosa to identify two Hispanic families and two Anglo families that would like to do some "sharing" of family activities together. Something less formal than a mentoring arrangement where two families would take turns hosting each other around an activity or event. I think this would promote a better understanding. I would like to do this with Anglo families outside of Perry, because there is a lack of understanding in the county. (Linda Nelson)
Provide one or more programs (resource management) for Spanish speaking clientele who participate in on-going programs at Creative Visions. (Barbara Woods)
I will present to NW area CYC's about the trip, my observations, and some suggestions on how to better reach their Mexican audience. With training and understanding, they should be able to better communicate with the Latino audience and therefore help them in needed areas.
I will use my new knowledge of the Mexican's belief in education, to help recruit for my Latino 4-H club in Woodbury County and to hopefully gain enough new members that another Latino club may be necessary, (Stephanie Anderson)
I have several goals, as outlined on the attached program logic model. Since our return, I have met with several Univ. of MO Extension faculty who work in the area of Hispanic immigration and issues in Missouri . In addition, I have been invited to display 12 of my Oaxaca photos at our university's upcoming "Cambio de Colores" (Change of Colors) Conference, 3/30-4/1/05. I will also conduct a lunch n' learn with my state 4-H colleagues on April 4th. (I'll send email separately.) On a personal level, I am partnering with my town's Parents as Teachers program to host a May 5th Cinco de Mayo event for parents w/ young kids. (Tammi Gillespie)
As we offer the Strengthening Families Program to Latino audiences, I will be respectful of their culture including their preference for including extended family members in family decisions and their preference for using extended family members for resources (such as child care). (Marilyn Bode)
Work with Rosa to organize 3 or more -15 minute lessons to meet the family financial educational needs of Latinos. These lessons could be taught where Latinos are currently gathering in the community. I.e., after church services, Head Start parent groups, etc.
Train Rosa and Spanish speaking volunteers in Dallas and Poweshiek Counties to teach the lessons described above to interested Spanish Speaking families and groups. (Ruth Freeman)
Des Moines County has not experienced the dramatic in-migration of Spanish-speaking immigrants. Our Des Moines County NEST, however, has initiated Spanish language classes that have become quite popular. I'm planning on meeting with this class to become better aware of the needs of our Spanish-speaking residents. I also hope to determine if there is an opportunity to proactively reach out to Latino youth through our 4-H program.
I'm also continuing my Spanish language study, with the goal of seeking fluency. I'm doing this with books, CDs and a possible language study trip to Mexico . (Don Buzzingham)
I plan to contact a local Hispanic minister to become acquainted with Hispanic families and their needs and especially want to encourage their participation in FNP. Then I would replicate this model in other counties. It is difficult to recruit these families for programs, but if they have a relationship with a church, maybe we can provide education through the church setting.
I plan to use the awareness of cultural foods I gained on the trip when preparing nutrition presentations for a Marshall County grant program. (Paulelda Gilbert)
I would like to do something in Buena Vista county where there is a large population of Hispanics. Francisco knows Spanish and I have enjoyed going with him on home visits with the FNP program. I get updates with a church mission in BV and would like to talk with the pastor and his parishioners to determine needs of the Hispanic population in his church setting. After promoting a program for Hispanics last winter and no one showing up, I feel a setting where Hispanics already feel comfortable would make a difference. I will share my slides of the day care center at child care providers meetings on April 25 and May 23 & 24. (Nancy Clark)
