Environmental Education Grants for 2010

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

 

PURPOSE:  to promote environmental stewardship and help develop knowledgeable and responsible students, teachers, and citizens.

 

Proposals are invited for innovative projects that design, demonstrate or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques to foster environmental stewardship.  Regional offices fund grants up to $50,000; EPA headquarters will fund grants ranging from $50,001 to $200,000.  Matching funds are required in the amount of 25% of the total project cost.  Projects may start no earlier than July 1, 2010.  The work plan should outline specific outputs and outcomes.  Priorities are included in the guidelines.  See:

Extension Risk Management Education Grants,

North Central Risk Management Education Center

 

PURPOSE:  to educate agricultural producers about the full range of risk management activities.

 

Proposed projects should identify target audiences, specify measurable impacts, and outline the process to achieve the impacts.  Projects must be results-based.  Project types for 2010 are:  value-added enterprises and farm diversification risks, human resources risks, and unrestricted grants.  The maximum for a single project is $50,000; however, proposals will be more competitive if  under $35,000.  Public-private partnerships and collaborations are encouraged.   Application of findings/results to other states in the region is important.  Guidelines are available at:

Regional Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Competitive Grants Program

USDA, National Institute of Food and Agriculture

 

PURPOSE:  To increase implementation of IPM through research and extension projects.

 

Proposed strategies will use new IPM tactics and systems to improve cost benefit analyses when adopting IPM practices; reduce potential human health risks from pest and related management strategies; and minimize adverse environmental effects from pests and related management strategies.  Specific priorities for FY 2010 are listed in the guidelines.  Extension field specialists with ideas should collaborate with campus faculty.  For guidelines, see:

National Integrated Food Safety Initiative

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA

 

PURPOSE:  to support food safety projects that demonstrate an integrated approach to solving problems in applied food safety research, education, or extension.

 

The Initiative requests applications that address a broad spectrum of food safety concerns – from on-farm production, post-harvest processing, and distribution, to food selection, preparation, and consumption.  Various models for integration of applied research, education, and extension will be considered for funding.  Applications with multi-state, multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary methods are encouraged.  Standard projects may request a maximum of $600,000 for up to 3 years.  If a project benefits a specific agricultural commodity, matching funds will be required.

Disaster Resilience for Rural Communities

CSREES & National Science Foundation

 

PURPOSE:  to initiate new research to understand the factors and conditions that result in resiliency in communities and families.

 

This is a new competitive grants program and administered by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI).  Proposed projects may request up to $400,000 over a maximum of 3 years.  Projects should address key problems of national, regional, and multi-state importance in sustaining all components of agriculture.  Guidelines are available at:

Conservation Education Program of the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP), Iowa Department of Natural Resources

 

PURPOSE:  to stimulate long-term environmental education throughout Iowa. 

 

Grants can be used to fund innovative programs.  Proposed projects may be large or small, comprehensive or focused on just one aspect of environmental education.  Awards in 2008 ranged from $4,950 to $50,000.  Partnerships are strongly encouraged.  Matching funds are not required but are strongly encouraged.  Guidelines and the listing of previously funded projects are available at:

Perpetuate a Good Idea Mini-Grant Program.  The REP CEP will also fund up to $5,000 for about 5 projects to replicate good ideas, concepts and programs that have surfaced as a result of previous CEP grants.  The mini-grant program has a separate request for proposals but uses the same due dates as the CEP.

Conferences and Small Demonstrations

Iowa Energy Center

 

PURPOSE: to develop and present conferences, workshops, exhibits, and small demonstration and education projects related to the Energy Center's mission areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Grants can cover up to 50 percent of eligible project costs, with a maximum of $7,500 per grant award. Projects will have a total duration not longer than one-year.  Collaborations among organizations are encouraged. Proposed projects must be located in Iowa, demonstrate a clear tie to energy efficiency and/or renewable energy and have a clear educational purpose. For guidelines, see:
