PURPOSE: to conduct and sponsor energy-related research and provide balanced information on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Pre-proposals are invited on several broad categories including: building and industrial energy efficiency, transportation energy efficiency, renewable energy resource assessment and technology development, conversion of biomass to replace petroleum-based fuels and chemicals, information and education for energy users. Multidisciplinary approaches and collaborations between organizations are encouraged. For more details, see:

Extension Risk Management Education Grants,
North Central Risk Management Education Center
PURPOSE: to educate agricultural producers about the full range of risk management activities.
Proposals are invited for projects that help farm and ranch families succeed through targeted risk management strategies. Priorities for 2009 are value-added enterprises and farm diversification risks, human resources risk, special emphasis challenge grants and unrestricted grants. Projects must be results based. A web-based training for applicants will be conducted on November 25, 2008 from 10 to 11 am. Guidelines and a listing of previously funded projects are available at:

Secondary Education, Two-Year Postsecondary Education, and Agriculture in the K-12 Classroom Challenge Grants program, CSREES, USDA
PURPOSE: to enhance the curricula in agricultural education and interest young people in pursuing higher education to prepare for scientific and professional careers in the food and agricultural sciences.
Proposals for a single-institution project are limited to $35,000. Projects proposed by an applicant and at least one additional partner institution may request up to $50,000. Matching funds are required on a dollar-for-dollar basis from non-federal sources. Additional information is available in the guidelines:

Environmental Education Grants
US Environmental Protection Agency
PURPOSE: to increase public awareness and knowledge about environmental issues and to provide skills necessary to make informed environmental decisions and take responsible actions.
Priorities for 2009 projects include capacity building, education reform, community stewardship, health, teaching skills and career development. Most grants will be in the range of $15,000 to $25,000. Proposals requesting funds greater than $50,000 up to $200,000 will be evaluated at the national level. Proposals for $50,000 or less will be evaluated at the EPA Regional level. Usually 8 to 12 regional projects are approved. The start date can be July 1, 2009 or later. Non-federal match of at least 25% of the total project costs is required.
Proposals must support several EPA strategic goals and should have well-defined outputs and outcomes. See the detailed guidelines:

Conferences and Small Demonstrations
Iowa Energy Center
PURPOSE: to develop and present conferences, workshops, exhibits, and small demonstration and education projects related to the Energy Center's mission areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Grants can cover up to 50 percent of eligible project costs, with a maximum of $7,500 per grant award. Projects will have a total duration not longer than one-year. Collaborations among organizations are encouraged. Proposed projects must be located in Iowa, demonstrate a clear tie to energy efficiency and/or renewable energy and have a clear educational purpose. For guidelines, see:
