Got Questions about the ISU Wordmark or Any University Trademark?
Internal units (including ISU Extension county offices) must follow the Visual Identity System when producing printed matter and the Internal Use Guidelines when ordering products. The Office of University Marketing manages the Visual Identity System and can answer questions when you are creating printed materials. The Trademark Licensing Office manages the Internal Use Guidelines and can answer questions when you are ordering merchandise with the trademarks.
The ISU Trademark website has information to help you, but staff also is available to assist with any questions or help you find a licensed vendor. When purchasing products with the marks, you must use a licensed vendor and complete the Internal Trademark Use Form. Trademark Licensing’s website has this form online for easy access as well as other information related to the use of the marks. For example:
Internal use form: Internal use of the trademarks must be reviewed by Trademark Licensing. “Custom designs” must meet the internal use design standards guidelines. Complete the form when you plan to use the marks on novelty items, T-shirts, etc. For the quickest approval, the completed form and your design should be submitted to the trademark office by fax, (515) 294-892, or by e-mail (trademark@iastate.edu) together. These can be submitted by you or the licensee. However, you may submit the form and design under separate cover. For example, you may send the form and your licensed vendor may submit the design to trademark separately. We will match the form to the design, review and send approval notification to the licensee. For auditing purposes, the licensee must keep a copy of the form.
Merchandise: A searchable database for licensed vendors is available to you to help locate licensees. You may search by product, by vendor or select from a pre-defined list (screenprinters for apparel, advertising specialty, all current licensees, etc.). You also may select the “New, Easier Way to Order Departmental Merchandise.” There is a select list of area licensed vendors that supply apparel or advertising specialty items to the university. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, call and ask! We can do more sophisticated searches in-house.
The Licensing Resource Group’s (LRG) is ISU’s contracted firm that assists the ISU Trademark Office with licensing administration. If you have a vendor that is not currently licensed but you would like to use it for obtaining products, LRG’s application form is online for easy access by the vendor. Products cannot be ordered until that vendor is officially licensed by LRG to produce ISU merchandise. All designs and forms are reviewed and approved by the ISU Trademark Licensing staff.
