WHAT'S NEW
ISU Extension 2003 wall calendars available
Extension wall calendars for 2003 are available at Extension Distribution Center (EDC). The calendar is 18 inches wide by 24 inches tall and matches the new look marketing materials that will be unveiled at annual conference. Cost is 25 cents per calendar and the identification number is EDC 249. This item is being made available at the request of the area directors.
Ask me what I learned today 4-H stickers available
Another new item available at EDC is 4-H 60K, Ask me what I learned today stickers. The stickers are available in rolls of 1,000 stickers for $12 per roll. Each sticker is 2 inches by 3 inches, 4-H green lettering on a white sticker with nonpermanent adhesive (so they can be easily stuck onto and removed from clothing). The roll is perforated between stickers so that the number of stickers needed can be torn off the roll. This item is being made available at the request of the area directors.
Post-it notes orders placed
Orders for 39 sets of post-it notes that match the new look marketing materials were placed in mid-September. If the off-campus printer remains on schedule, the post-it notes should be available by annual conference.
Update on portrait costs
Need to have your ISU staff photograph taken? You can have your photo taken during annual conference. According to ISU Instructional Technology Center, the sitting fee is $33.75 (paid by your office). Educational Materials and Marketing Services (EMMS) pays for the cost of the wallet-size prints.QUICK TIPS
New spam detection system begins
Spam is junk e-mail that you don't want, didn't ask for and can't get rid of. Current estimates are that spam constitutes more than one-third of the e-mail that passes through the Internet every day.
On Oct. 1, a new spam detection system will be implemented at ISU for e-mail sent to an iastate.edu address. This includes all mail received by Extension staff.
Currently ISU Extension staff members receive very little spam. However, spam is a growing issue and a spam detection system can help you control your e-mail so that important messages aren't missed.
Spam detection is more art than science. It works by comparing the header and contents of an incoming e-mail message to a set of rules to detect messages that might be spam. In addition, it ranks messages by the number of matches it gets. The more rules matched in an e-mail message, the higher the probability the message is spam.
The new spam detection software will add a warning [SPAM? #] to the header for any incoming message that violates enough spam rules that the spam detection software considers it to have a high probability of being spam. More details about spam filters can be found on Extensions TechNews site.
