WHAT'S NEW
Windows 2000 security features may change log-on procedure
Because of added security features in Windows 2000, you may need to log on to your system with the local administrator account (instead of your regular net-ID) to install some software, change system settings, add or remove printers, etc. If you experience problems, please contact the Extension Information Technology (IT) Support Hotline, (515) 294-1725.Annual Web directory reports available on request
The Extension IT unit has, for some time, offered a free monthly statistical report for Web directories. The free monthly reports will continue. However, weve received some inquiries about providing an annual report for statistics for Web directories. The cost for running an annual stats report will be $100.00 for each Web directory. The stats will be run on request only, and an account number should be provided at the time the request is made. Reports will be run in July and will cover the time period from July 1, 2001, to June 30, 2002. To request an annual statistics report, send e-mail to extensionweb@iastate.edu. Please include your name, account number and the Web directory name for which you want statistics. IT also is offering any back month reports for $25 per month per Web directory. If you have questions, please contact Jeanne Wiebke at jwiebke@iastate.edu.UPDATES
Great Plains IDEA receives awards
Iowa State University along with Continuing Education and Communication Services (CECS) is a member of the Great Plains IDEA, a collaborative effort with several other institutions. (IDEA stands for Interactive Distance Education Alliance.) This consortium received a FIPPSE grant to develop a model for multi-institutional efforts to deliver distance education and recently received two national awards.
The ADEC EXCELLENCE award for distance education efforts was awarded in April. The consortium received a $5000 cash award that it will use for the Great Plains IDEA Web site.
In April the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) awarded the consortium the 2002 Distance Learning Community Program of Excellence award for the Master of Family and Consumer Sciences with specialization in Family Financial Planning. This award was given at UCEAs annual conference April 17-19 in Toronto, Ontario.
For more information about Great Plains IDEA, check the Web site or contact Kris Phelps at CECS, kphelps@iastate.edu.

Virus alert: Be sure to delete suspicious attachments
When VirusScan is up to date and configured to scan downloads for viruses, it will detect viruses in e-mail attachments as they download. When a virus is detected, the program will post an alert message and ask if you want to clean, delete or continue. In some cases, when you select clean, the program will report that the file can't be cleaned and ask you to select one of the other options. If you select delete at this point, VirusScan may report that the file can't be deleted either. The most likely reason is that VirusScan has already deleted the attachment (when it tried to clean it). To make sure that the attachment is gone, you can do a search for the attachment (go to the Start menu and select Find or Search). If you've received a suspicious attachment and you want to delete it without opening it, you can right-click on the attachment (click once with the right mouse button) and select Delete Attachment from the pop-up menu.
