WHAT'S NEW

New system scans e-mail for viruses
Iowa State University has purchased and installed a system that scans e-mail for known viruses as the e-mail messages are received. If the system detects a virus it cleans it, if possible, and changes the header of the e-mail to include the phrase: "Virus detected and cleaned; was:" before forwarding it to the intended receiver.

For example,
Subject: Virus detected and cleaned; was: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

These scanners are still undergoing testing and some filtering issues are being worked out. Installing virus scanners at the e-mail server level will help reduce the number of viruses that reach your desktop; however, installing, running and updating VirusScan on your computer is still important. The server-level scanners are not infallible and may go off-line at times. In addition, viruses also are transmitted through exchanging files with others, through downloading programs on the Web and through Web pages with malicious code embedded.

Windows 2000 preferred, but XP Professional will do
Extension Information Technology still is recommending the Windows 2000 operating system for new machine purchases. However, if you decide to purchase a machine with Windows XP, be sure that you purchase Windows XP Professional, NOT Windows XP Home. The difference between the two versions is significant for a networked office situation. In particular, Windows XP Home does not support membership in Active Directory domains. Active Directory domain membership is important so that file server (S: drive) access works properly.

Hispanic radio program available
New Horizons is an audio program produced exclusively for Hispanic listeners by University of Illinois Extension that features news, health and cultural programming. The program is written and produced specifically for the Hispanic community. It is not an adaptation of an English-language show.

The program is available at no cost. If you have a radio station in your county that produces programming for Hispanic listeners, please contact Elaine Edwards for a New Horizons informational packet that you can take to your radio station. Or, the communications staff will forward the information to your radio station if you prefer. Contact Elaine at eedwards@iastate.edu.

The ISU Extension marketing plan is that all counties will obtain a copy within the next three years.

An order form is available from the ISU Extension Marketing Web site. From this site you can view the display as it would look mounted on the Nimlock display board and also on the Downing display board. Cost is $225 plus shipping per display. QUICK TIPS

Client survey template on Web
Some CEEDS in northeast Iowa requested a template for a short survey to use with clients following extension programs. The survey contains questions regarding the information received and treatment by staff. Clients may request additional information and identify issues of concern. This template is in Word, with two half-page surveys to an 8 1/2 by 11 page. It’s available from the ISU Extension Marketing Web site.

Check the Continuing Education and Communication Services Web site. Also visit the ISU Extension Web site. Send your comments or questions about this newsletter to Laura Sternweis (lsternwe@iastate.edu).
