WHAT'S NEW
* ISU computer purchasing standards revised
At the beginning of May 2001, Iowa State University introduced computer purchasing standards (http://www.iastate.edu/computing/standards/purchase.html). These purchasing standards are updated on a quarterly basis and were revised at the beginning of July 2001. All computers purchased for Iowa State University, including ISU Extension, should be at or above these minimum standards.
* ISU desktop support standards adopted
Effective July 1, 2001, the University has adopted desktop support standards (http://www.iastate.edu/computing/standards/support.html). Repair service for machines outside the minimum support standards may not be available.
* Interactive, computer-based training CDs available
Many new, interactive, computer-based training CDs are available through Extension's Information Technology (EIT) lending library. Items are available for a two-week checkout period at no cost. For information about either of the following CDs or other items, please contact EIT at (515) 294-8658.

QUICK TIPS
* File classification codes on the Web
ISU Extension's suggested file classification codes (revised 1994) are on the Web as part of the field office procedure guide (http://www.extension.iastate.edu/ofcguide/AppD.html). This is intended to help counties manage their filing systems.
Extension publications produced since 1994 by campus communication staff have this code printed on them. Other materials coming into county offices also can use this system. The system includes non-publication headings such as "Administration and Organization" and "Agencies and Organizations."
* Viruses are everyone's concern
According to the Computer Virus Prevalence Survey 2000, there are approximately 45,000 known viruses. The chances that you will receive a virus on your computer are over 100 times greater today than they were in 1994. The average virus "encounter" costs an organization approximately $2,000 (your time, IT time, lost files, lost computer access). It is everyone's job to help minimize the spread of viruses.
A few quick tips
- Be sure you have anti-virus software installed on your computer.
- Be sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date.
- Be sure your anti-virus software is turned on and performing regular scans of your hard drive and incoming e-mail attachments.
- Don't open any attachments unless you know the person they are from and you are expecting them.
- Don't pass on virus hoaxes.
- If you think you've received a virus, contact EIT support at (515) 294-1725.
Throughout July and August, we will be updating our virus information Web pages to bring you additional information about how you can protect your data and your programs from viruses.
