WHAT'S NEW
* Transmittal deadline changes for July 4th holiday
Because the July 4th holiday falls on a Wednesday (the usual Transmittal deadline) and is a university holiday, the Transmittal deadline for that week will be 12 noon, Tuesday, July 3.* Novell file servers to be replaced
In the upcoming weeks and months, Extension IT will replace aging Novell file servers with network attached storage (NAS) devices. These devices will simplify the network and provide better service to ISU Extension staff. Initially, Extension IT will focus on offices that are network-located in the 515 and 641 area codes. The 712 and 319/563 area codes will follow. More information will be provided to individual offices as the project progresses.* New version of WebMail available
WebMail is a Web site that can be used to access your e-mail on the main ISU servers. On May 22, Academic Information Technology (AIT) installed a new version of the WebMail software. This version handles your mail files in a faster, more efficient manner. The first time you use WebMail after the change, it has to convert files to the new format. After that one-time change is finished, you will see substantial improvement in performance. Check the Web for more information on the WebMail change.* CECS to change staff photo support
As part of our cost recovery plans, as of July 1, CECS will no longer pay for staff portrait sitting fees during annual conference. This means ISU Photo Service will charge field staff for their sitting fee whenever staff members have their portraits taken. Portrait sittings can be scheduled with ISU Photo Service on an individual basis when staff are on campus. [Call Photo Service at (515) 294-4807 to schedule your portrait sitting.] No photographer will be present during future annual conferences. At this time, CECS will continue to manage the staff photo files and pay for prints. We are beginning to establish a digital photo file. Currently we have approximately 250 staff photos available in digital form. We'll let you know more about this service as it develops.
UPDATES
* Master Navigator program to change
After careful review and analysis of program objectives, client feedback, status of resources and slow growth pattern, it has been determined that the Master Navigator Program will not continue in the future as it exists today. Program information -- past, present and future -- can be found in the "Master Navigator Sunset Review," a pdf document. Direct questions to Robin Brekke at rbrekke@iastate.edu.* Interest grows in Fathom
CECS is coordinating ISU's involvement with Fathom, the aggregate e-learning site (http://www.fathom.com). Online courses from ISU will be listed on Fathom.com sometime this summer. A for-profit company, Fathom partners with world leaders in education and research. A Web handbook detailing the ISU/Fathom partnership will be posted soon on the CECS Web site (http://www.lifelearner.iastate.edu). Interest in developing courses for Fathom is growing. More than 70 faculty and staff members attended a CECS-sponsored workshop on Fathom in early June.* E-answers situation resolved
According to Ron Thomas, E-answers Web coordinator at the University of Florida, the situation with E-answers has been resolved. He writes:
Several months ago, the domain name registration service allowed the name to lapse, despite our payment well in advance. The name was then registered by another registration service to a site with which none of us wishes to be associated. The bad news is that due to two different registration services being involved, and because of a dispute over what happened to the original payment, we have not re-acquired the rights to the e-answers.org name.
The good news is that we now have the rights to e-answersonline.org. Those of you who have been using the IP address of 128.227.242.197 can continue to do so if you wish, or you can use www.e-answersonline.org or just e-answersonline.org.
We will be using a domain name registration service other than the one that caused the original problem, so please feel free to link to this name or publish it without fear of losing it again.
Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding during this ordeal, and we hope you will continue to find E-answers to be a valuable resource.
