WHAT'S NEW

* New Web site for Continuing Education and Communication Services
Continuing Education and Communication Services has a new Web site (http://www.lifelearner.iastate.edu/). The redesigned site features information about credit and noncredit courses, extension publications, news releases and more.

UPDATES

* Review penalty mail regulations
Because special federal funding supports penalty mail, specific regulations exist regarding mailing items using the penalty mail privilege. The ISU Extension Field and County Operations Guide includes the penalty mail regulations (http://www.extension.iastate.edu/ofcguide/AppG.html).

QUICK TIPS

* Try Filescatter instead of e-mail attachments
Have you ever wondered how to distribute a file to a large number of people without sending them an e-mail attachment? An alternative method is to use the new Filescatter Web site (http://dbs.extension.iastate.edu/filescatter/). This Web site is in the testing stage, so the look and feel may change. However, the purpose of the site is to provide an alternative to sending large attachments to mailing lists. This method of delivering files has two advantages:

  • people receiving the files can retrieve them at their convenience, and
  • it's server friendly. It only stores one copy of the file on the server rather than a separate copy for each recipient.

* Make your own mailing lists
Iowa State University's mail system offers the capability to create your own e-mail lists. Go to the Acropolis Login (http://asw.iastate.edu/). After login with your NetID and password (in general, this will be the same username and password used for e-mail in Eudora), go to the link "Manage Lists." After the list is created, change the properties to make it an e-mail list; then you can add members to the list. Your account will own the list, therefore you can add or delete members as required. Changes are not instantaneous, but are processed overnight. After your list is created, you can add it to the Extension List of Lists (http://www.extension.iastate.edu/listsearch) so other staff will be aware of your list and can send e-mail to it.
