WHAT'S NEW
*ISU summer off-campus courses begin as early as May 17
Check the Lifelearner Web site for summer 2004 courses by academic subject, or by delivery method. Registration for these courses opens Wednesday, April 7. Fall courses will be on the Web site by April 1. Tuition grant applications for eligible ISU merit and professional and scientific (P&S) employees are due May 1 for summer and August 1 for fall.*Two new off-campus degree programs begin this summer
The Master of Education, specialization in Curriculum and Instructional Technology, is designed for K-12 teachers and other educational practitioners who want to integrate technology into teaching and learning. The courses are online but usually include several Saturday meetings on campus so the students can have a learning community environment. This non-thesis program is 32 credits offered in a three-year rotation. Information on this program is on the Web, or contact Clyciane Michelini, program coordinator, clyciane@iastate.edu.The Child Nutrition Program Leadership Academy begins with three-week summer courses June 14 through July 2 on campus. Online courses will be offered fall and spring semesters. The program is designed for professionals in the school foodservice industry and leads to a Ph.D. in Foodservice and Lodging Management (formerly Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management). Information on this program is on the Web, or contact Jeannie Sneed, jsneed@iastate.edu.
A list of all off-campus degree and certificate programs is available online.
*Life in Iowa Club offers weekend help
The Life in Iowa Club is a Government of the Student Body(GSB)-funded student volunteer service organization initiated by students who have interned and/or done service learning in the Life in Iowa program. Club members can help work on weekend service projects in any Iowa community. So far this semester the Life in Iowa Club has agreed to do projects in Jefferson and West Branch. Applications from other communities are welcome. More information and community application forms are available from club president, Joe Haley, jhaley@iastate.edu or Life in Iowa student coordinator, Lindsey Black, lblack@iastate.edu.*New software CDs in March transmittal packet
In the March 5 transmittal packet you received three CDs containing important software. Please keep them in a safe location. There is a $20 charge to replace a CD if it is lost. The first CD is a new Scout CD. This is set up for Windows 2000/XP machines and replaces all previous Scout CDs in your office. You should dispose of all previous ones -- they will no longer function. This will be the last Scout CD shipped to your office. When the new network is completed this year you will be able to access Scout directly over the network. If your office is already connected to the new network, you should not use the new Scout CD.
The second CD is Office 2003 Professional. Most computers that meet the university's minimum support standards should be able to run this program. To upgrade, contact Barb Crandell at crandelb@iastate.edu with information about what computer you're installing the software on and who the primary user is. Barb will give you the necessary install code. This software is licensed under the university's MCA agreement.
The third CD is Windows XP Professional. This CD is supplied so that if you have problems with a current installation of Windows XP, you can diagnose and repair the problems. If you're considering upgrading to Windows XP, pay close attention to the accompanying documentation. Upgrading from Windows 2000 to Windows XP will generally take a half day or longer. This software also requires an install code from Barb Crandell (crandelb@iastate.edu) before you can do an upgrade or clean install.
UPDATES
*Nonprofit Management Academy benefits local organizations
Since it began in 1999, the Nonprofit Management Academy has joined with local partners in five sites around Iowa to enhance the management skills of leaders in the nonprofit sector. In Iowa City, 52 nonprofits have sent directors, employees, board members, and volunteers to various leadership programs. They represent local nonprofit groups, neighborhood groups, churches, local government agencies, and youth organizations. The Nonprofit Management Academy is one part of the ISU Outreach Academy, a university-wide initiative that develops customized educational programs to help learners continually upgrade their skills. The Outreach Academy also develops partnerships between businesses and faculty and Extension professionals to design and deliver timely educational programs to targeted audiences. More information on the ISU Outreach Academy is online.*Group computer purchase 2004
We soon are going to do our third annual computer group purchase program. Like last year, we will provide a web-based ordering capability. The online ordering form will be available from April 1 to April 30. Extension Information Technology (EIT) will confirm each order via e-mail.You can order both laptop and desktop Dell computers. The specifications haven't been finalized, but you can look at the initial configurations and estimated prices on the Web site. The laptop will come with a carrying case and optional docking station. Each laptop will have wireless capabilities.
To decide if it's time to upgrade, check the ISU Minimum Support Standards. Note that both ISU and Microsoft no longer support Windows 95 or Windows 98. It is very important to replace computers that cannot be upgraded to Windows 2000 or XP.
If you are interested in purchasing computers for home use you will need to go through the campus Administrative Information Technology (AIT) sales program. More information will be provided on this when it is available.
If you have questions on the Extension group purchase program, contact Floyd Davenport (515-294-8658) or floyd@iastate.edu.
QUICK TIPS
*Update your VirusScan software to VirusScan Enterprise 7
If you are running any version of VirusScan other than Enterprise 7, you need to update now. It is on the Scout CD mentioned above. If you don't know what version of VirusScan you have, right-click on the VShield icon and select 'About VirusScan' or 'About VirusScan Enterprise.'Important note: VirusScan Enterprise 7 will not run on Windows 98 machines. If you are still running Windows 98, you need to update to Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
Instructions for installing VirusScan Enterprise 7 are available online. Go to the For Staff Web site -- Technology Items -- Anti-Virus Information.
If you currently are not running any version of VirusScan, you need to install it immediately. Once you install it, you also will want to download and run the latest version of Stinger.
