1990s. Growing in the Garden begins during the 1998-1999 school year. Kindergarten through third grade children eat, play, paint, dress, decorate, write, read, add/subtract, and sing through gardening. The curriculum “grows curiosity about agriculture, natural resources, food, and people,” much like the before- and after-school clubs of the early 1900s. Third-graders read about Thomas Jefferson, keep garden journals like Jefferson did, and make their own books about him. The program runs through schools, home-school programs, Clover Kids, church schools, summer programs, city park and recreation programs, county conservation, special interest groups, and others. Visit the Growing in the Garden Web site.
