Paul Taff, at the request of the United States Department of Agriculture, accompanies 54 American rural youth to Europe and the Near East for a summer program, beginning the International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) in 1951. Taff is third from the left in the second row aboard the steamship Georgic, ready to sail from New York. One of the group, Elizabeth Elliott, Kansas, becomes Assistant Dean and State Leader, Home Economics Extension Program, Iowa State University, in 1977, and Director of University Extension in 1989.

 

Jerry Lineweaver, the first executive secretary of the Iowa 4-H Foundation, meets with members of the boys and girls councils. The foundation supported the establishment of the 4-H camp.

In the 1950s, the focus of club work changes from livestock and home economics to personal growth and development. Life skills of leadership and citizenship receive emphasis.
