4-H celebrates: 1940s

4-H’ers help during WWII to spread the word that increased food production will “help win the war, save starving people, and help win the peace.” 4-H Victory Gardens sprang up across the state.

The flier at left reads: “These and millions of other people . . . must be fed, and Iowa 4-H girls must and can help to feed them.” The flier at the right, “Enlist in the 4-H Victory Army,” says that more than 25,000 Iowa young people aided their country through 4-H Club work in 1944. Below, 4-H girls plant beets and carrots.

A campaign begins in 1946 to build an Iowa 4-H Camp. 4-H girls voted in favor of it at their 1945 State Convention. Both boys and girls attending the 1946 4-H Conservation Camp approved the idea.
