4-H celebrates: 1920s

Iowa 4-H boys select their own projects; some decide to do a beef project each year.

Music becomes a 4-H project. In 1920, Edith Barker makes singing and music appreciation a project for 4-H girls in Scott County, perhaps the first music work in the nation for 4-H members. With the help of Fannie R. Buchanan the program spreads across the state. Two songs written by Miss Buchanan in partnership with Rena Parrish, The songs "Plowing” and “Dreaming” become 4-H classics. In 1929 the Iowa State College Chamber Singers record the album, “Songs of the 4-H Clover,” based on the first national 4-H songbook.
