4-H celebrates 100 years: Photo Gallery Iowa figures prominently in the 4-H story. Click on the links below to find photos of Jessie Field Shambaugh and other Iowans who played important roles in 4-H's development. The birth and growth of 4-H spans the twentieth century. In 2002 every county of the land celebrates the 4-H centennial. Entering its next century, the organization stands ready to bring to each child its emphasis on educating the complete person, equipping that person with tools for leadership, and instilling in that person a love of home, community, and country. 4-H began by teaching children how to select the best seed, raise the
best crop, and bake the best bread. Todays youth learn citizenship,
communication, and leadership basics; choose projects from aerospace to
zoology; and still may learn the best agricultural and nutrition practices.
