Youth can beat the winter blahs, have fun, and learn by doing when they join 4-H. Parents can find lots of activities for youth (grades 4-12). Check at a local county office of ISU Extension for how to enroll youth in a community club. Children (K-3) can join Clover Kids. Youth (grades 4-12) can pick from such fun projects as
Baking or cooking. Food preparation for family meals. Packing and freezing extra food. Planning food for a 3-day emergency.
Cats, dogs, geckos, gerbils, and other pets
Clothing selection, including finding the best fit, understanding fabrics, and clothing for special occasions
Gardening, including planning the layout and selecting seed varieties
Learning about Iowa prairies, wetlands, or woodlands. Reading a book about forests.
Music, be it listening, playing an instrument, singing, composing, or performing
Photography, from lighting, techniques, and composition to digital cameras
Restoring a tractor
Visual arts. Using various media, from pencil to multimedia; learning more about design, color
Wildlife, in both urban and rural areas
Or youth can create their own projects, deciding what they want to learn and do. They can join with other youth to make their community a better place or bring happiness to someone else. Youth groups can enjoy year round activities and increase their teamwork at the Iowa 4-H Camping Center near Madrid in Boone County.
