: Sometimes, all it takes is a little one-on-one time with a parent for a child to really open up to them. The Strengthening Families Program, which was established in 2003 for fifth and sixth-graders and their parents, is designed to do just that. The overall goal for Strengthening Families is to help families communicate better with each other and to help the kids learn to communicate effectively with their peers. North Union School fifth and sixth-graders and their parents are invited to enroll in this free, seven week program which consists of attending two-hour classes. During the weekly classes, the first hour consists of the parents and children working with separate facilitators and the second hour working with each other to discuss and practice what they have learned. Parents learn about the different stresses that youth face today, while the youth talk about their goals and dreams, then, with their parents, they talk about how they can achieve and support those goals. The youth also learn how to make good choices, how to seek out good friends and role models, and how to handle peer pressure. They are guided through discussions with a series of problem-solving steps such as: ask questions, name the problem, tell what could happen, suggest another route, start, and ask others to join you. In one exercise the parents step into the role of a child who wants to take part in a potentially risky activity while the children use what they learned to suggest alternatives. To graduate, families must be present at five out of seven of the sessions.
