frost How does frost effect forage?

The first frost of the autumn generally brings a flurry of
forage related questions. These questions usually center on three
general topics:

toxic prussic acid potential and management of
frosted sudangrass and sorghum sudangrass hybrids;
is frosted alfalfa toxic to grazing animals; and
now that we've had frost, should I harvest the
last alfalfa cutting?

What is 4-H Clover Kids?
Clover Kids is a 4H Youth Development Program newly offered by East Pottawattamie to kids in grades 1-2. This program is a stepping stone to the 4H Club Program, and is available to these younger youth who are interested in learning more about the 4H program.

shadow days 2008 ISU Shadow Days

The College of Agriculture & Life Sciences would like to present high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors in your county with an opportunity to experience a day in the life of a college student. This event, known as Shadow Days, will be hosted by the Ambassadors student organization and will take place on November 2nd & 3rd. This event is a perfect orientation to ISU for any student with an interest in any of the following majors in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

New COOL Requirements for Livestock

As many of you know, the USDA is preparing for the mandatory COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) that goes into effect September 30, 2008.

Teens Can Apply for Area Council

High school age 4-H members who are interested in helping develop 4-H and youth programs on an area level are encouraged to apply for the 2008-2009 Area Council.
Teens who should apply should be interested in the following areas:
 Meeting new friends from other counties
 Developing leadership skill
 Getting ideas to take back to their county
An overnight retreat will be held November 8th and 9th. Youth will participate in get-acquainted activities and then plan a variety of events and activities to be held for SW Iowa youth of all ages.
The youth are selected from a simple application which is available at the Extension office. Applications are due October 6, 2008

4-H Photocamp is designed to give kids, 7th through 12th grades, the opportunity to learn the basics and techniques of photography, while having a great time! Held in June at the beautiful Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid, Iowa, campers will learn from qualified professional photographers, and then get the chance to try out their new skills themselves.

On June 29th East Pottawattamie County held their annual Communications Event at the Community Center in Oakland. We had 2 Share the Fun, 9 Educational Presentations, and 3 Working Exhibits this year!

On June 21st East Pottawattamie held their Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue, and $15 Challenge Event. We had 6 participants and the judge had some very hard decisions to make! The girls all had a great time and enjoyed their shopping experiences!

As of May 2007, USDA Rural Development requires first-time homebuyers to complete education from a certified provider to qualify for the agency’s rural housing loans. Often rural residents have to drive many miles to attend homebuyer classes. The online course will be a convenient option for many Iowa residents.
