Winter is the time to think about pruning trees and shrubs before spring returns. The Dubuque County Master Gardeners and Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens are presenting hands-on workshops to teach the proper pruning techniques to keep trees healthy and beautiful. Both experienced and new gardeners will benefit from this program. The workshops will be held at the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens on Thursday, March 13th or Saturday, March 15th from 10:00 – 11:30am.
City of Dubuque Forester Steve Pregler will lead the workshop and teach about the proper tools and techniques for pruning trees and shrubs. Pregler has been a forester for many years and is a well-known tree care expert in eastern Iowa. "Once you know what to look for the tree will tell you where to make your pruning cuts,” says Pregler. "Improper pruning can be detrimental to your tree’s health.”
Attendees at the workshop will get hands on experience using tools and get the chance to practice their skills. The tools will be provided by the Dubuque Arboretum, so participants should not bring their own. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather because most of the session will be held outdoors. If there is snow, attendees should wear boots because some of the trees may not be on shoveled paths.
