ISU Extension and Outreach will offer a nationally-renowned farm business course for northeast Iowa dairy women in November.  ISU Extension and Outreach is offering “Women Managing Dairy Cattle” in Holy Cross, Iowa. The course will be held from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on November 11, 18, and 25 at Neumann’s Bar and Grill at 927 Main St.

Betty Pins was inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17. Betty served as a 4-H leader for 32 years. She and her sister-in-law started the Bankston Congenial Girls 4-H Club in 1967. She enjoyed watching her four daughters grow and learn as they participated in the 4-H program.

Managing nutrients from manure is becoming a high priority among most livestock farmers for economic and environmental reasons. Discussions will focus on nutrient management including various options and methods to manage total farm nutrient balance, manure management, and nutrient runoff.  The ISU Extension and Outreach Dairy Team is putting Manure Management as a top educational priority for this programming year.  The on-farm tours in NE Iowa will highlight various manure management systems for all of us to better our skills of managing manure.

"Juntos: Together for a Better Education" is a 6-session course that helps Latino families create educational goals and explore options for higher education.  The course will take place at Cascade High School starting October 5th. Each class includes a meal, childcare for younger siblings, and family-centered activities for 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th grade students and their parents.  This program is free for all participants.

Farmers talking to farmers and learning from each other will help Iowa ramp up water quality efforts and implement new management practices to carry out the state’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The goal is to reduce the nitrogen and phosphorus loads in water leaving farm lands.
