November 17, 2014

Please extend a warm welcome to Beth Oberhoffer, our new County Youth Coordinator.  Through community building, resource sharing, educational support, and outreach, Oberhoffer will be working to develop partnerships and provide resources and expertise for adult volunteers and youth through the 4-H Program. She will be directing the Dubuque County Youth Leaders and volunteers and provide guidance for their service in the community.

Welcome to Brittany Clayton, our new Urban Youth Coordinator!  Clayton will work with youth, volunteers, and professionals to plan, implement, and evaluate a progressive series of educational programs and experiences that work toward multiple life skill outcomes including leadership, citizenship, communications, personal life management, and knowledge. Her primary focus will be positive youth development using programs that connect young people with caring adults and involving them over an extended period of time.

We are proud to announce and welcome Laura Klavitter as our new Horticulture Educator.  Through community building and resource sharing, educational support and outreach, Klavitter will be working to develop partnerships and provide resources and expertise for urban and commercial agriculture programs, gardening, continuing education, and healthy lifestyles through horticulture. She will be leading the Dubuque County Master Gardener volunteers and provide educational opportunities and guidance for their service in the community.

October 15, 2014

Farmers and landowners will learn about the new programs authorized by the Agricultural Act of 2014 (commonly referred to as the Farm Bill) at an informational meeting conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and local USDA Farm Service Agency staff members. The Dubuque County meeting will be held at NICC - Peosta on Monday, December 1st from 1:00 - 3:00pm.

Betty Pins was inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17. Betty served as a 4-H leader for 32 years. She and her sister-in-law started the Bankston Congenial Girls 4-H Club in 1967. She enjoyed watching her four daughters grow and learn as they participated in the 4-H program.

Come support a great cause! The Dubuque County Youth Leaders will be having a Steak Fry Fundraiser on Sunday, September 14th from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Neumann’s Bar & Grill. Proceeds benefit Happy Feet, our 4-H Youth Leaders’ project to buy shoes & boots for kids in need in our area.

The Agricultural Act of 2014 (2014 Farm Bill) has authorized a one-time base acreage reallocation and program yield update. The Farm Bill has also authorized new farm programs including Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC). PLC and ARC crop programs provide price and revenue, respectively, payments to eligible producers for the 2014 through 2018 crop years. Read the full article for more details.

Each year during Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week the Dubuque County Extension Council selects an outstanding member of the community to receive the Friend of Extension Award. This year’s honor has been awarded posthumously to Charles Smith, a life-long 4-H member and Extension Council volunteer.  Mr. Smith passed away unexpectedly while doing chores on January 22, 2014. The delegation included Andy Dougherty, Epworth and a member of the Farley Wranglers 4-H Club.

On November 3rd, Dubuque County 4-H held its annual Awards Night at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. This event recognizes 4-H members, volunteers, leaders, and parents for their service and dedication to the 4-H program throughout the past year. More than 150 participants attended and enjoyed an ice-cream social followed by the presentation of awards.

Henry Kruse Jr. grew up being an active member of the Dyersville Jr. Farmers 4-H club. He later served Dubuque County by being a leader for over 40 years. He led all six of his children through the 4-H program and looks forward to watching his grandchildren participate in 4-H, too.
