The Holy Cross Home Helpers 4-H Club has cancelled their meeting tonight on January 7, 2015 due to the EXTREMELY cold temps that we are experiencing.  They have rescheduled the club meeting for Wednesday, January 21, 2015.  The business portion of the meeting will start at 6:30 PM and presentations starting at 7:00 PM.

Money Smart Ag Conference will be on Tuesday, February 10, from 9 am – 2 pm, at Tama Hall, Hawkeye Community College, 1501 E. Orange Road in Waterloo.   Nationally-recognized professionals will present on a wide variety of topics including business transitions for farm families, state and federal ag loan and tax credit programs, agriculture estate planning, your farm’s enterprise value, crop insurance, Farm Bill, fence laws, eminent domain, investing, mobile farm record keeping and business transitions for farm families.

Iowa State University Extension is offering several ServSafe® classes for food service professionals. ServSafe® training will provide knowledge every food service provider must know about food hazards and proper food handling practices in order to keep food safe and protect the establishment against the costly nightmare of a foodborne-illness outbreak. Participants will learn ways of prevention, regulatory requirements, and how to improve food quality.

Organic dairy now consumes around 5% of the milk market, a movement that started with some humble beginnings in Wisconsin by a group of dairy producers and interested others who had a dream of marketing organic milk. Today that dream is realized and organic dairy production has become an avenue to increase profit that more producers might consider utilizing.

Looking for something fun for your kids to do when they have days off of school? The Dubuque County Extension and Outreach office is offering fun hands on science based day programs open to all kids in Dubuque county. Each session will consist of a full day of learning with drop off beginning at 7:30 am and pick up by 5:30 pm. Kids will stay all day and need to bring a sack lunch and drink.

Iowa dairy producers have the opportunity to learn about emerging dairy industry issues at the 2015 ISU Extension Dairy Days hosted by Iowa State University Extension specialists. The program will be held on February 4th at Neumann's in Holy Cross in Dubuque County.

Betty Pins was inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17. Betty served as a 4-H leader for 32 years. She and her sister-in-law started the Bankston Congenial Girls 4-H Club in 1967. She enjoyed watching her four daughters grow and learn as they participated in the 4-H program.

Come support a great cause! The Dubuque County Youth Leaders will be having a Steak Fry Fundraiser on Sunday, September 14th from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Neumann’s Bar & Grill. Proceeds benefit Happy Feet, our 4-H Youth Leaders’ project to buy shoes & boots for kids in need in our area.

Each year during Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week the Dubuque County Extension Council selects an outstanding member of the community to receive the Friend of Extension Award. This year’s honor has been awarded posthumously to Charles Smith, a life-long 4-H member and Extension Council volunteer.  Mr. Smith passed away unexpectedly while doing chores on January 22, 2014. Madison, WI- A delegation of hundreds of 4-H’ers enjoyed several days of fun and learning during the 59th annual National 4-H Dairy Conference on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, September 29-October 2, 2013. The delegation included Andy Dougherty, Epworth and a member of the Farley Wranglers 4-H Club.

On November 3rd, Dubuque County 4-H held its annual Awards Night at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. This event recognizes 4-H members, volunteers, leaders, and parents for their service and dedication to the 4-H program throughout the past year. More than 150 participants attended and enjoyed an ice-cream social followed by the presentation of awards.

Henry Kruse Jr. grew up being an active member of the Dyersville Jr. Farmers 4-H club. He later served Dubuque County by being a leader for over 40 years. He led all six of his children through the 4-H program and looks forward to watching his grandchildren participate in 4-H, too.
