There has been a lot of progress in beef cattle genetics and genetic tools in the last few years.  Cow calf producers have an opportunity to learn how they can make genetic improvements in their herd at upcoming meetings in Vinton on March 3rd and Maquoketa on March 4th.

Area hay and forage producers are invited to attend the 32ndt Annual Eastern Iowa Hay Producers Association (EIHPA) Annual Meeting and Conference on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Buzzy’s in Welton, Iowa.  Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the program scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

The 2015 Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference is scheduled for Saturday, March 14 at Sinsinawa Mound Center, Sinsinawa, Wis. This is the 21st year for the conference, which annually draws 500 woodland landowners from Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. According to Jesse Randall, Iowa State University Extension forester, “It has become one of the largest private woodland owner conferences in the nation. The conference regularly fills to capacity, so those interested in participating are encouraged to register early to secure their place and receive the ‘Early Bird’ registration discount.”

The Holy Cross Home Helpers 4-H Club has cancelled their meeting tonight on January 7, 2015 due to the EXTREMELY cold temps that we are experiencing.  They have rescheduled the club meeting for Wednesday, January 21, 2015.  The business portion of the meeting will start at 6:30 PM and presentations starting at 7:00 PM.

Iowa State University Extension is offering several ServSafe® classes for food service professionals. ServSafe® training will provide knowledge every food service provider must know about food hazards and proper food handling practices in order to keep food safe and protect the establishment against the costly nightmare of a foodborne-illness outbreak. Participants will learn ways of prevention, regulatory requirements, and how to improve food quality.

Looking for something fun for your kids to do when they have days off of school? The Dubuque County Extension and Outreach office is offering fun hands on science based day programs open to all kids in Dubuque county. Each session will consist of a full day of learning with drop off beginning at 7:30 am and pick up by 5:30 pm. Kids will stay all day and need to bring a sack lunch and drink.

Betty Pins was inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17. Betty served as a 4-H leader for 32 years. She and her sister-in-law started the Bankston Congenial Girls 4-H Club in 1967. She enjoyed watching her four daughters grow and learn as they participated in the 4-H program.

Come support a great cause! The Dubuque County Youth Leaders will be having a Steak Fry Fundraiser on Sunday, September 14th from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Neumann’s Bar & Grill. Proceeds benefit Happy Feet, our 4-H Youth Leaders’ project to buy shoes & boots for kids in need in our area.

Each year during Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week the Dubuque County Extension Council selects an outstanding member of the community to receive the Friend of Extension Award. This year’s honor has been awarded posthumously to Charles Smith, a life-long 4-H member and Extension Council volunteer.  Mr. Smith passed away unexpectedly while doing chores on January 22, 2014. Madison, WI- A delegation of hundreds of 4-H’ers enjoyed several days of fun and learning during the 59th annual National 4-H Dairy Conference on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, September 29-October 2, 2013. The delegation included Andy Dougherty, Epworth and a member of the Farley Wranglers 4-H Club.
